Area 51: home to secret aircraft or aliens?

Area 51 is a secret research and testing ground based around the dry bed of the Groom Lake in Nevada. The area was originally used for Army tests during the second world war. It’s acknowledged as the research facility where the U2 spy plane and the Stealth Bomber were developed. The site was left abandoned after the war until 1955, when it reopened for secret aviation testing. Area 51 has become infamous for its secrecy and strange occurrences, mainly as the airfield’s name wasn’t officially recognised by the US government until 2013. The CIA publicly acknowledged the existence of the base for the first time on 25thJune 2013, following a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request filed in 2005, which meant they had to declassify documents detailing the history and purpose of Area 51. The documents claimed the site was merely a testing site for the government’s U-2 and OXCART aerial surveillance programs.

Area 51 is closed off to the public, and has a no-fly zone (known as R-4808N) surrounding the site which extends up to space and restricts all commercial and military flights from entering that do not originate from the base itself. Knowingly flying into R-4808N means pilots can face a court martial, dishonourable discharge and prison time as a result. The border of area 51 is not fenced, but are marked with orange poles and warning signs that photography isn’t allowed and deadly forces will be used on those who insist on trespassing. The site is also guarded by hundreds of closed-circuit security cameras and manned by guards armed with M16 guns who are dressed in military-style desert uniforms. There is no official number regarding how many people have died from attempting to break into the site. The roads leading up to the site are also full of sensors which transmit any vehicle movement on the roads.

The secretive nature of the site has led many conspiracy theorists to believe the site is being used to harbour aliens and UFO’s for testing.

The Roswell Incident

In July 1947, a rancher in Roswell, New Mexico, found a field of metal debris on the ground, composed of materials he did not recognise and alerted the authorities. The military soon arrived to remove the wreckage for analysis. Later on, it was taken to Wright Field in Ohio. Due to a military press release, the debris was believed to have come from a “flying hexagonal disk in shape”. On July 8th 1947, the Roswell Daily Record carried the extraordinary headline “Roswell Army Air Field Captures Flying Saucer on Ranch in Roswell Region”. Later that afternoon, the Air Force issued a statement to indicate that the wreckage was simply a crashed weather balloon.

Research by ufologists uncovered numerous witness statements that contradicted the official statement released by the Air Force. Ranches and Air Force personnel who had seen the wreckage insisted it was made of materials unknown to science, whilst a woman who worked for the military in the region reported that bodies had been recovered from the wreckage. A nurse at the Roswell Base Hospital gave details of the bodies, stating that they were clearly not human. In 1994, a film of an autopsy of the alien corpses also surfaced.

Conspiracy theorists believe that the US government attempted to mask a flying saucer of extra-terrestrial origin had crashed at Roswell and that they had studied the debris and corpses in secret; transferring the wreckage to the ultra-top-secret base of Area 51. At the site, scientists were able to reverse-engineer new technologies, such as the Stealth Bomber, by working backwards from an advanced alien technology.

This story was confirmed by Bob Lazar, a former research scientist at the base, who came forward during the 1980’s to reveal the full story. Lazar maintained that US scientists had used the Roswell wreckage to reverse engineer their own advanced flying devices using an ‘exotic element’ which had only recently been created by civilian scientists to provide power and anti-gravity. Lazar claims it was originally obtained through trade with an alien race, and that the research took place in a giant underground complex below Area 51.

Rob Lazar:

In an interview with reported George Knapp in 1989, Lazar described working on propulsion systems for “nine flying saucers of extra-terrestrial origin”. He says the alleged secret site, called S-4, was located several kilometres south of the Area 51 facility. He claimed he examined an alien craft that ran on an antimatter reactor powered by the (then un-synthesised) element 115 (moscovium). Lazar claimed the facility was adjacent to Papoose Lake, and consisted of concealed aircraft hangers built into the mountainside. Lazar explained that element 115 generates a gravity wave that could help propel the studied vehicle.

Lazar also claims to have read US government briefing documents that described alien involvement in human affairs for the past 10,000 years. The beings were called Grey aliens and are alleged to originate from a planet orbiting the twin binary star system: Zeta reticuli.

Theories:

Theories regarding Area 51 include:

· The site harbours the storage, examination and reverse engineering of crashed alien spacecraft, including material supposedly recovered at Roswell

· Meetings or joint undertakings with extra-terrestrials occur here

· Area 51 develops exotic energy weapons for the Strategic Defence Initiative (SDI) or other weapons programs

· Area 51 is involved in the development of weather control

· Area 51 is involved in the development of time travel and teleportation technology

· Area 51 is involved in the development of exotic propulsion systems related to the Aurora Program

Sightings at/near Area 51:

During the 1950’s, there was a huge increase in the supposed UFO sightings around the area (roughly the same time the U-2 planes were being tested).

1952: Two pilots saw three unusual delta wing aircraft flying in a V-formation over Carson Sink

1965 – 1967: Charles Hall claimed that while working at Nellis Air Force Base in Nevada he had contact with tall, white aliens who often travelled with CIA agents to Las Vegas casinos for entertainment

Surprisingly, despite Las Vegas being home to Area 51, it is not listed in the top 5 states with the most UFO sightings. Instead Washington, Montana, Vermont, Alaska and Maine made the top 5 cut with the most UFO sightings per year.

Area 51 today:

Area 51 is still very much in use today. According to Google Earth, new constructions and expansions are continuously happening. On most early mornings, eagle-eyed visitors can see strange lights in the sky moving up and down in the early morning. These lights are caused by the semi-secret contract commuter airline using the call sign “janet” that transports workers from Las Vegas’s McCarran Airport to the Area 51 base.

As for what's happening these days in America's most secretive military base, few know for sure. Merlin has some educated guesses, including improved stealth technology, advanced weapons, electronic warfare systems and, in particular, unmanned aerial vehicles. Chris Pocock, a noted U-2 historian, told Popular Mechanics he thinks classified aircraft, more exotic forms of radio communication, directed energy weapons, and lasers are currently under development at the base.

Approximately 2.1 million people have signed up to “storm” the US military base caused by an event on Facebook called “Storm Area 51: They can’t stop all of us”. The event is set for 20thSeptember 2019. An Air Force spokeswoman Laura McAndrews said government officials knew about the meme and discouraged people from attempting to enter military property. She stated “Area 51 is an open training range for the US Air Force and we would discourage anyone from trying to come into the area where we train American Armed Forces. The US Air Force always stands ready to protect America and its assets”.
